Standing ((In)) Waves
by Christopher Hamilton

An ocean awaits – stand and let it wash over you. Swelling, ebbing, flowing. Bathe your body and brain in a vibrational experience of infrasonic sound. Interact with the invisible, let the invisible interact with you. Additional sonic ingredients may also be included, in various combinations - 10kHz Soundwich, Radio Infrequencies, Gallows Guitar Humours.

"Utilizing stereo subwoofers, a unique crossover/integrator, and modular synthesis tools, infrasonic frequencies will be produced with a very slow modulation of frequency rate. Additional extremely low frequency waveforms will be produced due to an acoustic phenomenon known as heterodyning, or beat frequencies. Frequencies just below and at the threshold of human low frequency hearing will be utilized, which also correspond to brainwave and mental states. The audience will be able to explore the slowly shifting standing waves of sound, walking through peaks and troughs and discovering interference nodes, or remain stationary and allow the waves to shift around them.

Chris Hamilton explores the sensory boundaries between hearing and touch, often in the context of ambient music and sound work. For this installation performance piece for Asheville Fringe Festival 2023, his focus is on crafting an immersive sonic experience through modular synthesis, electronic music, and thrift store radios. A background in hearing science (Doctor of Audiology) informs the acoustic/auditory approach and exploration of experimental and ambient sound.
