DOUBLE FEATURE

Navigating Synchronicity
by Elsea Mayes-Brown/ Ember Maze

This piece is an amalgamation of Elsea's interdisciplinary forms of artistry. There's a saying that translates roughly to, "The music is married to the dance", as in dance and music exist as co-creative forces. This piece was created as an embodiment of the relationship between music and dance through a lens of technological expression. It is simultaneously a musical arrangement and a dance composition.

Flawed and Whole
by Kristen Aldrich

What does it mean to be white and anti-racist? Through storytelling, movement, unanswerable questions, and french fries, Flawed and Whole is one white woman grappling with self acceptance and racial identity, while trying to be the best ally and accomplice possible.

Elsea Mayes-Brown/ Ember Maze

Ember Maze is the production project of Asheville-based artist Elsea Mayes-Brown (she/they). Elsea's artistic process is rooted in the philosophy that connection (with self and with community) breeds creativity.

Elsea is a seasoned dancer specializing in African Diasporic movement. Throughout the Diaspora, it's tradition that dance and live music accompany one another. There's a saying that translates roughly to, "The music is married to the dance", as in dance and music exist as co-creative forces. Where there is music there is dance, and they synchronously inform one another.

Elsea has spent the past 20 years in studios; on stages; in crammed warehouses; and on open air dance floors at the edge of nowhere exploring the connection between movement and music. She credits her dancefloor experiences for inspiring her music production journey, and is heavily influenced by dark psychedelic trance; funk; dancehall; and hip-hop. Elsea aims to meld mesmerizing grooves that transcend genre and challenge the listener to find comfort in pushing boundaries. The project being submitted is an amalgamation of their primary forms of creative expression, dance and music, and was designed as an embodiment of the marriage of music and dance.
